Yet many members of the community of historians have remained conservative in their conception of what constitutes the proper territory for historical study. In other words, the hallowed separation between the human and extra-human worlds between culture and nature is ever harder to sustain. With notions of hybridity and co-evolution in vogue, environmental historians extend their gaze beyond the strictly human world to consider interactions with the rest of nature: what different people at different times and in different places have thought about nonhuman nature just as it matters that a person is a biological entity as well as a Catholic or capitalist, it also makes a difference whether a pig is a capitalist pig or another kind of swine and what they have done to and with it and, just as importantly, what it has done to and with us.

Oxford Handbook of Cities in World History

The City: A World History tells the story of the rise and development of urban centers from ancient times to the twenty-first century. It begins with the establishment of the first cities in the Near East in the fourth millennium BCE, and goes on to examine urban growth in the Indus River Valley in India, as well as Egypt and areas that bordered the Mediterranean Sea. Athens, Alexandria, and Rome stand out both politically and culturally. With the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, European cities entered into a long period of waning and deterioration. This urban growth also accelerated in parts of the world that came under European control, such as Philadelphia in the nascent United States.

In for the first time the majority of the planet's inhabitants lived in cities and towns. Becoming globally urban has been one of mankind's greatest collective achievements over time and raises many questions. How did global city systems evolve and interact in the past? How have historic urban patterns impacted on those of the contemporary world? And what were the key drivers in the roller-coaster of urban change over the millennia — market forces such as trade and industry, rulers and governments, competition and collaboration between cities, or the urban environment and demographic forces? The Oxford Handbook of Cities in World History offers a detailed comparative study of urban development from ancient times to the present day.

Surveying several millenia of history of all things urban everywhere, the page Oxford Handbook of Cities in World History , available since in a more affordable paperback version, inspires awe. It is hard to think of another book that crams so much of what is there to know about the history of cities between two covers, and with such unassailable erudition. But how much of it can, or even should, the attentive reader retain? If the proof of a pie of this size is in the eating, this one is a feast for readers hungry for pure knowledge. Digestion, alas, is another matter.
