Language, Truth, and Logic and the Anglophone reception of the Vienna Circle
This edited collection provides the first comprehensive volume on A. Making use of pioneering research in logical empiricism, the contributors explore a wide variety of topics, from ethics, values and religion, to truth, epistemology and philosophy of language. Among the questions discussed are: How did Ayer preserve or distort the views and conceptions of logical empiricists? How are Ayer's arguments different from the ones he aimed at reconstructing? And which aspects of the book were responsible for its immense impact? Providing important insights of both historical and contemporary significance, this collection is an essential resource for scholars interested in the legacy of the Vienna Circle and its effect on ethics and philosophy of mind. Language, Truth and Logic defines the verification principle of logical positivism. It discusses the uses and applications of the verification principle as an instrument of logical analysis. According to Ayer, the principle of verifiability is a criterion of meaning that requires every meaningful statement to be capable of being verified. Statements whose truth or falsehood cannot be verified are meaningless. Statements that have no literal meaning may have an emotional meaning, but they do not express propositions that can be analytically or empirically verified. Analytic statements are tautologies they are true by definition, necessarily true, and true under all conditions. The truth of analytic statements depends only on the meaning of their constituent elements, and it does not depend on confirmation by empirical testing.
If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? Does it contain any experimental reasoning concerning matter of fact and existence? Commit it then to the flames: for it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion. I explained to my students that the anti-metaphysical strategy employed by the Positivists and by Ayer involves demonstrating that metaphysical statements are literally meaningless. Ayer proposes a third criterion for meaningfulness and that brings us to VP, which says: A sentence is meaningful if and only if one could, in principle, explain how one would go about showing it was true or false.

It is interesting to note that analogies between sound and colour were not first suggested by artists. Aristotle already mentioned the idea in his De Sensu. Newton compared the seven colours of the spectrum with the diatonic scale of music and only fairly recently have physicists decided that such a comparison had no real bases in fact. The Clavilux of Thomas Wilfred was probably the most highly developed colour organ.
former class comprises the a priori propositions of logic and pure mathe- matics, and these I allow to be necessary and certain only because they are analytic.
The Historical and Philosophical Significance of Ayer’s Language, Truth and Logic
Ayer — was only 24 when he wrote the book that made his philosophical name, Language, Truth, and Logic hereafter LTL , published in In it he put forward what were understood to be the major theses of logical positivism, and so established himself as the leading English representative of the movement, Viennese in origin. In endorsing these views Ayer saw himself as continuing in the line of British empiricism established by John Locke and David Hume, an empiricism whose most recent representative was Bertrand Russell. The major portion of his work was devoted to exploring different facets of our claims to knowledge, particularly perceptual knowledge and knowledge that depended on inductive inference for its credence.

Language, Truth and Logic is a book about meaning by the philosopher Alfred Jules Ayer , in which the author defines, explains, and argues for the verification principle of logical positivism , sometimes referred to as the criterion of significance or criterion of meaning. Ayer explains how the principle of verifiability may be applied to the problems of philosophy. Language, Truth and Logic brought some of the ideas of the Vienna Circle and the logical empiricists to the attention of the English-speaking world. According to Ayer's autobiographical book, Part of My Life , it was work he started in the summer and autumn of that eventually led to Language, Truth and Logic , specifically Demonstration of the Impossibility of Metaphysics —later published in Mind under the editorship of G.
