Are science and religion at odds with each other? Moreover, the view that science and religion are often in conflict is particularly common among Americans who are, themselves, not very religiously observant as measured by frequency of attendance at worship services. Those who are religiously unaffiliated often have supernatural beliefs and spiritual practices, even though they say they do not feel connected to a particular religion.

Faith vs Fact : Why Science and Religion Are Incompatible

There was debate for centuries about the origins of the universe and how to explain stellar and planetary activities in the heavens. And, these disputes persist with at least two current science-related books addressing the divide between those who think science and religion are fundamentally at odds and those who argue that science and religion can be compatible. Those most inclined to see religion and science as generally in conflict are those who, themselves, have no particular religious affiliation or are not religiously observant.

Among the three-in-ten adults who say their own religious beliefs conflict with science, the most common area of conflict centers around teachings about the creation of the universe and evolution. White evangelical Protestants and Hispanic Catholics are more divided on this question. When thinking about their own religious beliefs, however, only a minority of adults perceive a conflict between science and their religious views.

Compared with , fewer Americans see a conflict between science and their personal religious beliefs in the new survey. Perceptions of conflict among black Protestants have stayed about the same, however. In an open-ended question, adults who said that science conflicts with their own religious beliefs were asked to provide up to three beliefs of theirs with which science was in conflict.

The same open-ended question was asked in , and American adults reported similar types of conflicts. The pattern of findings on this question is broadly in keeping with public views on the role of religious organizations in social and political matters. By contrast, a majority of those who identify with a religion e.

Coyne argues that religion and science are incompatible, by surveying the history of science and stating that both religion and science make claims about the universe, yet only science is open to the fact that it may be wrong. Coyne was astonished that after having published his book Why Evolution Is True that the proportion of creationists in United States still remained between 40 and 46 percent. He felt that faith was the reason that kept them from accepting the facts and evidence for evolution. Coyne defines science as "a collection of methods" that yield knowledge which may be rejected or confirmed via testing. With this definition in hand, he went on to argue that religion and science were inherently incompatible "because they have different methods of getting knowledge about reality, different ways of assessing the reliability of that knowledge, and, in the end, arrive at conflicting conclusions about the universe. A substantial portion of his book criticizes theistic evolution , arguing that if God were to use evolution as a method of creation, the evolutionary process should show signs of directionality. Kirkus Reviews lauded the book as "important", stating that it deserves "an open-minded readership.

Scientific and technological advances have had profound effects on human life. In the 19th century, most families could expect to lose one or more children to disease. Today, in the United States and other developed countries, the death of a child from disease is uncommon. Every day we rely on technologies made possible through the application of scientific knowledge and processes. The computers and cell phones which we use, the cars and airplanes in which we travel, the medicines that we take, and many of the foods that we eat were developed in part through insights obtained from scientific research.

Some scientists assert that valid knowledge can only come from science. They hold that religious beliefs are the remains of pre-scientific explanations of the world and amount to nothing more than superstition. On the other side, some people of faith believe that science conveys a materialistic view of the world that denies the existence of any reality outside the material world. Science, they think, is incompatible with their religious faith. I contend that both — scientists denying religion and believers rejecting science — are wrong.
