Understanding College & Career Ready Standards
The K standards on the following pages define what students should understand and be able to do by the end of each grade. The CCR and grade-specific standards are necessary complements—the former providing broad standards, the latter providing additional specificity—that together define the skills and understandings that all students must demonstrate. Standards in this strand: CCSS. To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts. Through extensive reading of stories, dramas, poems, and myths from diverse cultures and different time periods, students gain literary and cultural knowledge as well as familiarity with various text structures and elements.
This alignment allows teachers to plan strategically to incorporate the Lead4Change lessons seamlessly into their classroom while still meeting district, state and national standards. Refer to the chart below to determine the standards covered in each lesson. The chart below lists the Common Core State Standards covered in each individual lesson and can be accessed in the resource section. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details and well structured event sequences. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.

The CCR standards anchor the document and define general, cross-disciplinary literacy expectations that must be met for students to be prepared to enter college and workforce-training programs ready to succeed. The K—12 grade-specific standards define end-of-year expectations and a cumulative progression designed to enable students to meet college and career readiness expectations no later than the end of high school. The CCR and high school grades 9—12 standards work in tandem to define the college and career readiness line—the former providing broad standards, the latter providing additional specificity. Hence, both should be considered when developing college and career readiness assessments.
