Eighteen anilic acids have been prepared from maleic anhydride and various aromatic amines and their properties and analytical reactions with various metal ions have been studied. The acid prepared from benzidine was insoluble in all common solvents and, hence, its application could not be studied.

Synthetic Reagents

Synthetic organic chemists have a wide range of reagents at their disposal for the reduction or oxidation of functional groups in organic compounds. The reagent to be used for any given transformation must be chosen carefully in order to ensure that only the desired functional group or groups is effected: some reducing agents, for example, will act on ketones and aldehydes but leave alkenes and carboxylic acid derivatives untouched, while other will reduce all of these functional groups. Different redox reagents will also transform groups to different extents: we will soon see oxidizing agents, for example, that will transform a primary alcohol to a carboxylic acid, and others that, given the same primary alcohol, will produce an aldehyde. Similarly, reduction of an alkyne can produce a cis -alkene, a trans -alkene, or an alkane, depending on the reducing agent used.

Some of the transformations that afford important categories of organic building blocks useful for the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates and APIs cannot be performed due to the hazardous nature of reagents and conditions.

20.1: Oxidation-Reduction Reactions of Organic Compounds- An Overview

Eighteen anilic acids have been prepared from maleic anhydride and various aromatic amines and their properties and analytical reactions with various metal ions have been studied. The acid prepared from benzidine was insoluble in all common solvents and, hence, its application could not be studied. Most of these reagents, except those obtained from aniline, o- and p-chloroanilines, nitranilines, p-amino-acetanilide and o-phenylenediamine, produced more or less quantitative precipitations with both thorium and zirconium. Their actions towards thorium and zirconium were very much alike. They also gave precipitations with mercury I , lead and cerium IV , but such precipitations were not complete. Ferrous iron showed greyish turbidity with most of the reagents, but ferric iron produced colourations varying from brown to violet, such colours were, however, found to be unstable either on standing for a while or on heating.

With it being half term here in the UK, what better use of sudden vast amounts of free time could there be than making an organic chemistry reaction map? This graphic looks at simple interconversions between common functional groups in organic chemistry. This map from the University of York was also very useful indeed, and gave me the idea of colour coding the arrows to indicate the reaction type. The reactions are organised in a somewhat different way than in your map, intended to emphasise the relationships between the functional groups, but the layout is horrible by comparison with yours. Keep up the good work.

This is a Reagent Code List for aiding organic chemistry students in determining the stucture of an Organic Chemistry reaction Product. Use of reagent code list allows to identify the net reactive species , i. Many students initially have great difficulty with reactions, where above or below the arrows, a series of reactants, solvents and catalysts are written.

Reagents are "substances or compounds that are added to a system in order to bring about a chemical reaction or are added to see if a reaction occurs. However, most processes require reagents made of chemical compounds. Some of the most common ones are listed below.
